Athens

We love Athens! It all started on the plane here, where we had our first fresh fruit and vegetables in almost two months. (We'll post pictures soon!) In the airport, we drank water out of the drinking fountain.

Since we've been here, we:

* Have gotten to eat several semi-home-cooked meals, or at least the best we can do with a plug-in grill and a portable gas range, provided by our hotel. It's been great! Lots of fresh fruits and veggies purchased at a nearby outdoor market.

* Visited the Jewish Museum of Greece, where we learned some interesting facts about the Greek resistance to the Nazis during WWII. One one island, when the Nazis requested a list of all Jewish residents, the list came back with only two names, that of the local bishop and the town mayor.

* Went for a run outdoors! We ran up and around a hill that's right next to the Acropolis and had some amazing views.

* Shopped for warmer clothes. We kind of forgot that it was still winter.

* Visited the Temple of the Olympian Zeus.

*Walked through the National Gardens. The last several days, Kelly has been talking about how she hasn't seen a peacock yet. Guess what we saw there!

* Went to the National Archaeological Museum.

*Climbed Lykavittos hill, with amazing views over the city.

We haven't yet gone to the Acropolis, though we've had amazing views of it, because there is a workers strike going on. Some people staying in our hotel told us that the workers have not been paid in three months. So it seems reasonable. It's supposed to be open tomorrow, so we'll keep our fingers crossed.
